Artist: Van Morrison
Song: Madame George
Album: Astral Weeks (1968)
Writer: Van Morrison
Tabbed by a little soul
Another remarkably beautiful but very simple song from
this album, which boasts one of the loveliest string
arrangements (especially at song's end - I'll include
a bit of it for budding guit-bow players) of the
album, and, really, in pop history.
Tuning: Standard (EADGBE)
Time: 4/4
Chords:
G - 320003
C - X32010
D - XX0232
These chords are the same, of course, as 'Cyprus
Avenue', but without the capo.
Okay, let's start!
Progression:
G (4 bars)
C (2 bars)
D (2 bars) *
*at this point Van plays a little suspended-chord run
on his E string as most folk players would at this
point. Mess about with the open string and 2nd fret.
Occasionally the progression is varied as such:
G (3 bars)
D (1 bar)
C (3 bars)
D (1 bar),
with the same rifflet on the D.
Now many people will be wondering what the strings are
playing. So to give a taste of what it is, get yer
bows out, and play along with this for the end
sequence, which is played in harmonies and octaves. I
will demonstrate as such, with the sequence played
simultaneously in high and medium octaves.
e 12-10-7-10----12-10-7-12-10-7-12-10-7-12-10-7-
B ----------------------------------------------
G ----------------------------------------------
D 14-12-9-12----14-12-9-14-12-9-14-12-9-14-12-9-
A ----------------------------------------------
E ----------------------------------------------
With the whole thing repeated often.
And that's all! Send me an email at
pulpalittlesoul@yahoo.com if you'd like more information.
