Wake Up: As played on Ironic Single CD (Modern Rock Live: Nov. 12 1995)
The reason why I took the time to tab this whole song is because this is my
most favourite song from Alanis, and especially this acoustic version.
I believe this is as close as you can get from playing it, I have seen many
attempts but not quite happy with it.
In order to simplify my work, I have simplify the chord picking into 4
different patterns which you will use as I suggest:
Pattern I Pattern II
e--------0-----0-------|-------0-----0-------|
B----7-----7-------7---|---7-----7-------7---|
G--4---4-----4---4-----|-5---5-----5---5-----|
D----------------------|---------------------|
A----------------------|---------------------|
E----------------------|---------------------|
Pattern III Pattern IV
e--------0-----0-------|----0-----0-----0-----0-|
B----7-----7-------7---|------7-----7-----7-----|
G--6---6-----6---6-----|--8-----8-----8-----8---|
D----------------------|------------------------|
A----------------------|------------------------|
E----------------------|------------------------|
Here are also some chords and how I think they are played (the conventional
can do, but sound a bit different), I particularly the D shape and use it
for a lot of other songs:
C D G E E+
e|--0--| e|--0--| e|--3--| e|--0--| e|--0--|
B|--1--| B|--3--| B|--3--| B|--0--| B|--0--|
G|--0--| G|--0--| G|--0--| G|--1--| G|--2--|
D|--2--| D|--4--| D|--0--| D|--2--| D|--2--|
A|--3--| A|--5--| A|--2--| A|--2--| A|--2--|
E|--x--| E|--x--| E|--3--| E|--0--| E|--0--|
Outro Chorus Chords:
C5 D5 E5
e|--0--| e|--0--| e|--0--|
B|--0--| B|--0--| B|--0--|
G|--0--| G|--0--| G|--4--|
D|--2--| D|--4--| D|--2--|
A|--3--| A|--5--| A|--2--|
E|--3--| E|--5--| E|--0--|
Structure:
Intro:
Pattern I - Pattern II (x2)
Verse:
(You like rain...)
Pattern I - Pattern II - Pattern III - Pattern II
(You like snow...)
Pattern I - Pattern II - Pattern III - Pattern IV
Chorus:
(There is...)
C - G - E - E+ (x2)
C - G - C - C
C - D - E - E+
Verse:
Pattern I - Pattern II - Pattern III - Pattern II (x2)
Pattern I - Pattern II - Pattern III - Pattern II (No picking, play like
chords)
Pattern I - Pattern II - Pattern III - Pattern IV
Chorus (Outro Chorus Type Chords):
C5 - D5 - E5 - E5 (x2)
Bridge:
For the Bridge, play a progression of harmonics, on 5, 7 and 12 bottom
strings, such as below:
e|-(12)-| e|-(7)-| e|-(5)-|
B|-(12)-| B|-(7)-| B|-(5)-|
G|-(12)-| G|-(7)-| G|-(5)-|
D|--x---| D|--x--| D|--x--|
A|--x---| A|--x--| A|--x--|
E|--x---| E|--x--| E|--x--|
12 - 7 - 7- 777 - 12 - 5 -5 - 555 (something like that)...
Verse:
Pattern I - Pattern II - Pattern III - Pattern II
(There is no love...)
Pattern I - Pattern II - Pattern III - Pattern IV
Chorus: (Same as Chorus before)
Outro:
C5 - D5 - E5 - E5 (x6)
This is it, I suppose, it is not mistake proofed, but should give you quite
a good idea on how to play it. It sounds brilliant on acoustic guitar, and
electric guitar as well.
Enjoy,
Steph
