LAST OF THE ARKANSAS GREYHOUNDS REVISION 1 3/23/96
Artist: Leo Kottke
Tablature: Roger Hess
NOTE: REV1 has alternate (simplified) pattern for Part 3
Here's a stab at an oldie but goodie.
I've never done tabbing this way before--I hope
it comes out OK.
Check my chords--my ear tends to classify everything as
a major, minor or seventh. I just decided at the last
minute that the Dm chords in part 3 were not F majors.
Also, maybe I shouldn't have tabbed out all of part 3,
since the same right hand pattern is used throughout
with few exceptions. Learn one line of part 3 and you
have the whole thing mastered!! Some transitional
details may be missing.
I would welcome any and all comments and corrections.

Part 3 (The Hard Way--See end for easier pattern)
There are several right hand patterns that seem to work for Part 3,
and these are my two favorites. The main intent was to find a
pattern that contained the bass arpeggio and had a full sound
without coming off like a repetitive banjo roll.
This part has evolved from a simple thumb (P), middle finger (M),
index (I) backwards roll that I used to play (that pattern appears
at the end and is not fully tabbed). The thumb would hit the
ascending and descending bass notes and the fingers would play a
backward roll, a triplet, I guess? A pattern could usually be
recognized, but it sounded fairly good. Under closer scrutiny it
seems that there may be three notes after each bass note, giving
a much fuller sound, although the playing gets frantic.
Play fluidly with accents on every fourth beat. The thumb should
play a rapid ONE two three four TWO two three four with the
accents on the notes indicated below with a ^. When played at
speed, the right hand I an M fingers will not really be plucking
the strings but instead will be lightly "dancing" across the
strings as the thumb chunks out the bass arpeggio. The accented
bass line (for a C chord) is:
|-----------------------------------------------------
|-----------------------------------------------------
|-------------------------0--------------------------- 15
|-----------------2---------------2-------------------
|---------3-------------------------------3-----------
|-3---------------------------------------------------
and the rest is played lightly, but fast:
|-----------------------0---0-----------0-------------
|-----------1-------1---------1-1---1-------1---------

|-----3---3-------------------------------3-----------
|-3---------------------------------------------------
p i p m p m p i p i p m p m p i p i p m p m p i
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
It seems that the secret for getting the speed up is the
back to back PIPM to PMIP right hand fingerings. The order
is probably not important as long as you alternate the
patterns.
Once the pattern is memorized, focus on hitting the bass
notes, and don't worry if the fingers can't find the exact
strings shown in the tab. A little bit of dirty picking is
fine as long as the bass is on.
This also avoids the sound of a distinct pattern, since
the arpeggio is also ascending and descending the strings,
creating a wall of sound.
Too bad. Wish I could play it.
