THE DRIVING OF THE YEAR NAIL 3/25/95
ARTIST: Leo Kottke
Album: 6 and 12 String Guitar
Transcription and Tablature: Roger Hess
Tuning: Standard EADGBE tuned down 1 1/2 steps
Here's tab (in kit form-you assemble) for my take on one of my all time
Kottke favorites. Play it at full speed, full volume, and full force. No
dynamics are required except a little damping here and there.
In most cases it is best to hold full chords rather than just the notes
indicated; for example, hold a full D7 chord for the first notes in Line 2
and the last section of Line 3.
Comments, other interpretations, and corrections are always welcome.

DRIVING OF THE YEAR NAIL
Part 1
Line 1 is a straightforward pattern that should be played with plenty of
bounce in the left hand to dampen the appropriate notes.
Start Line 2 with a full D7 chord and slide the pinky from the 3rd fret to
the 8th, catching the 2nd string 5th fret with the LH 1st finger.
In the middle of line 2 (at the 0h-1 hammer on the 2nd string) the right
hand middle finger plucks ( strums?) both 2nd and 3rd strings--not essential
but it gives a fuller sound.
The end of line 3 (the 2 0 2 3 1st string run) can also be played with an M
I P M pattern, hitting the first string (2nd fret) with the thumb.

Part 3
For years I've played the entire harmonic section of lines 14 and 16
entirely at the 7th fret, except for the last note at the 5th fret. It now
sounds to me like it is being played as tabbed below. The 12th fret to 7th
to 5th jumps are not terribly difficult even at the speed of the recording.
The vertical lines under the tab indicate beats.
