WALK AWAY
James Gang
Joe Walsh
Tabbed by Loral Johnson - www.loraljohnson.com

My notes:

I've always played this song in my band in "G". Joe Walsh has played this
song in all kinds of keys, from live to studio versions, and different bands
he's performed it with.

I went searching for a James Gang CD with Walk Away on it. At first I
thought I was out of tune, so out comes my strobe tuner and now in tune I
find that the James Gang version was recorded in G# (or Ab, which ever you
prefer,.. haha).

Now for the fun. There is a LOT of muted struming in this. I'm sure if
you're familiar with the song, you know what I mean in the beginning. I'll
do my best to tab this as accurately as I can for you.

INTRO:
V-Lots of muting strumming here!
E-------------------------------------|-----------------------------
B-------------------------------------|-----------------------------
G--(6)(6)--5---5---5---(6)(6)-5-------|--6--5---5---5----6--5-------
D--(6)(6)--6---6---6---(6)(6)-6-------|--6--6---6---6----6--6-------
A--(4)(4)--6---6---6---(4)(4)-6-------|--4--6---6---6----4--6-------
E----------4---4---4----------4-------|-----4---4---4-------4-------
^ v S S S S S S S ^
|
Muted Strum here too!!!

Where the "S" is above, mute the strings distinctively with your right
hand to stop the sound (listen to the song!).

The parts above are more or less played with the verse parts.

-------

The fill go something like this over the intro:
(On second time around)

E-----------------11------------------|-----------------------------
B--~~9~~---11(13)---11(13)(11)--9-----|-----------------------------
G-----------V--------v----------------|-----------------------------
D-------------------------------------|-----------------------------
A-------------------------------------|-----------------------------
E-------------------------------------|-----------------------------
Takin' my time, etc. (vocal)

NOTES: ~~~ vibrato!! Bend the string at the 11th fret to equal the
note at the 13th fret; then while holding that note, play the E string
at 11th fret; play the bent note again, slide it back to the normal 11th
position note and then play the 9th fret note. It's like a double
bend....

OTHER FILLS:

E-------------------(2)>>>>>>>>>>8~~~~|-----------------------------
B-------------------------------------|-----------------------------
G---6(8)-6-6-6-6--4-------------------|-----------------------------
D---V---------------------------------|-----------------------------
A-------------------------------------|-----------------------------
E-------------------------------------|-----------------------------
Bend this up to 8th note. Do some picking as you SLOWLY
bring this note back to a natural 6th position

If you need any other fills figured out, email me....

CHORUS:

Seems to me....... You don't wanna talk about it....

E---X---X----------------------|---------------------------|
B---X---X----------------------|---------------------------|
G---5---5---(6)-6-6------------|---------------------------|
D---6---6---(6)-6-6----ETC.!!--|---------------------------|
A---6---6---(4)-4-4------------|---------------------------|
E---4---4----------------------|---------------------------|

SOLO:

E||----------------------|---------------------|-----------------------4|
B||----------------------|---------------------|------------<-----------|
G||-----------8-10-V8(10)|----------8-10-V9(10)|-----~8-101110-8~<6<5---|
D||--(4)-/-10------------|--(4)-/-10-----------|4)/10-------------------|
A||----------------------|---------------------|------------------------|
E||----------------------|---------------------|------------------------|

My Notes:

a. Start with your finger on the fifth fret D string slide up to
the 10th. V8(10) Means to fret at the 8th fret, bend note to equal tone
of 10th fret.

b. 10-8~<6<5 Means play the 10th fret, vibrato on 8th, slide to 6th
slide to 5th fret. Pause for effect, play the 4rd fret high E string.

E||----------------------|--------------------|------------------------|
B||----------------------|--9-11-12-13~~~-----|------------------------|
G||-----------8-10-11-(11)--------------------|------------------------|
D||--(4)-/-10------------|--------------------|V8(10)(10)(10)(10)8~-6--|
A||----------------------|--------------------|------------------------|
E||----------------------|--------------------|------------------------|

My Notes:

a. OK, now here is where everyone is going to disagree, or may be able to
improve on this tab, but in the last bar of the above frame
{7(9)--V7(9)V7(9)7-5} What I'm doing is sort of a Joe Walsh tribute by
playing this similar to the opening riff in "Life's Been Good". On the
recording (based on which you have, it is a bit muddled with multi tracked
guitars.. I play in a 3 piece band), so I have to play it differently,
but in my situation, this works.. Continued below:

E||----------------------|--------------------|------------------------|
B||------------------9~~~|--------------------|------------------------|
G||-----------8--10------|--------------------|------------------------|
D||--(4)-/-10------------|--------------------|------------------------|
A||----------------------|--------------------|------------------------|
E||----------------------|--------------------|------------------------|

Back to the Chorus..

If you've ever tried to tab the nuances of Joe Walsh, you'll know why
I'm ending it here.

There are other subtle fills, etc. that are in this song. If you really
need help, you can email me and I'll see if I can find what you need to
help you out.
