The Scientist
by Coldplay
from the album "A Rush of Blood to the Head"
transcribed by Tom Whelan
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
This tear-jerker song is fairly simple to play on guitar. The original
chord progression is played on piano, but it's simple enough to cross-over
without much of a hassle.
The verses of the song go like this:
C#m A E B/E
and repeat until the chorus.
Here are the chords the way I play them. They sound very close to the
original piano part (in my opinion) when played this way.
C#m A E B/E
e--o----5----7----7--
b--5----5----9----7--
g--6----6----9----8--
d--6----7----9----9--
a--4----7----7----7--
e--x----5----x----x--
The chorus goes like this
A E B/E A E B E A E A
which consists of the same chords above with the addition
of a Bmaj barre chord, which is the same as the A moved up two frets,
obviously.
If you've looked up how to play this song, I'm assuming you've listened to
it a few times, but here is how the chords match up with the lyrics
in case it doesn't seem immediately apparent.
Verse:
C#m A E B/E C#m (repeating)
Come up... meet you... I'm sorry... how lovely you are... I had...
Chorus:
A E B/E
Nobody said... It's such a shame... to part...
A E B E
Nobody said... No one ever... this hard... Take me back to the start...
(then repeat E A until you see it fit to begin the second verse)
The structure of the song is basic. Here it is in reference to how many
times each progession is played, with the entire chorus counting as
one progression in itself:
Verse x2 without vocals
Verse x4 with vocals
Chorus
Verse x1 without vocals
Verse x4 with vocals
Chorus
Verse until ending on E with accompanying "Oooooo"s
That's pretty much it. The only other thing I could suggest would be to
maybe play the verse chords with the low E string resounding throughout
the verse progression on the home stretch to give it more beef if you're
pounding the strings and making rockin' grimaces.
Have fun, and may this tab help you make some girls cry at an open mic somewhere.
