the way tom does the intro is kinda cheating. he wires all of his
guitars with a toggle switch that shuts down the input from the
guitar to the amp. so instead of switching between pickups, it
switches all of them on or off.

to make the rapid helicopter sound in the intro, he just mutes the
strings and whips the switch back and forth... the clicking noise
is the natural result of the toggling.

you can kinda fake it by using the normal pickup selector and muting
but nothing beats the real thing.
