10000 MANIACS - "Verdi Cries" Tablature
Official 10000 MANIACS Tablature & Sheet Music »
From: "Ben Weiss"
Subject: CRD (sort of): 10,000 Maniacs, "Verdi Cries"
A word of explanation is in order: this was the first song I sounded out
when I learned to play the guitar two and a half years ago. Sometime after
that, I came across a version of the song in a songbook, which was
significantly different, but by that time I was so used to my version that
the songbook one sounded wrong. The songbook version uses only four chords
for most of the song--Eb, Bb, Cm and Ab, which turn into G, D, Em and C in
this key--plus a Gb (Bb) on the "Oh" at the end of the second chorus.
Anyway, I hope someone can get some use out of this version (which I think
breaks every rule of chord progressions in the book, but...), and I'll try
to post some more *official* Maniacs in the future.

Words & music: Natalie Merchant
This song should be fingerpicked, not strummed.
INTRO: G A7 D7 D Dsus D
C B7 G C
The man in 119 takes his tea all alone
G A7 G7 A7
Mornings we all rise to wireless Verdi cries
C A7 D7 D Dsus D
I'm hearing opera through the door
The souls of men and women, impassioned all
Their voices climb and fall, battle trumpets call
I feel the bath and climb inside, singing
G A7 D7 D Dsus D
CHORUS: La la la, la la la
G A7 D7 D Dsus D
La la la, la la la
He will not touch their pastry but every day they bring him more
Gold from the breakfast tray, I steal them all away
And then go eat them on the shore
CHORUS, followed by:
C D G
Oh, la, la la la la la
C B7 G C
I draw a jackal-headed woman in the sand
G A7 G7 A7
Sing of a lover's fate sealed by jealous hate
G C
And wash my hand in the sea
G A7 G7 A7
With just three days more I'd have just about learned the entire score

All is memory, taken home with me
The opera, the stolen tea, the sand drawings, the virgin sea, all
